Hey you beautiful people! I am back ;)

HIGHLIGHT ALERT!!.... Hmm any guesses what is today's blog about?

Well let me help you, it's all about Hair highlights which is trending Bollywood to Hollywood alike.

I came up with this topic due to my own experience (few weeks back)... and trust me it wasn't that great, because I was unaware about anything related to Hair highlights (it was my first time) it just felt like saying yes to your BF when he proposes you for marriage and you know deep inside it is kinda permanent (*Hiding face under the table*)

Before I began, more than I could ask queries to the Hair specialist, She was all over me... with overwhelming options that we can do with Hair coloring, like..what type, what color, ammonia free or with ammonia?? Trust me my head was spinning ( and I felt as if i was left all alone in a desert hunting for water), after I was bombarded with like a hundred of choices, I was like please stop!!! (with my puppy face ;) , its something I normally do to get away from any situations ... a must try guys..Haha :p) ... and asked her can you guide me instead --- she gave me a smile and explained me how it's done ;) (such a relief - felt like I finally found water in the desert)

Then and now, I decided I should share my learnings with you all. It's a unisex thing... there is no gender bias in hair highlights at least :p

Let me break down the blog into following categories for easy readability.

1. What is hair highlighting and of how many types?

2. What is trending nowadays?

3. What is the best highlights in trend based on you skin tone?

4. Is it harmful to get Hair Highlights?

5. Is it a unisex thing to do?

LEARNING 1 - What is hair highlighting and how many types are they?

Hair Highlighting/Lowlighting is changing a person's hair color, using lightener or haircolor to color hair strands. There are four basic types of highlights: foil highlights, hair painting, frosting, and chunking. Foil method is when your hair is colored and wrapped in a foil to avoid coloring other hair strands, Hair painting where a brush or a comb is used to color hair, Frosting the hair is when you do highlights with the cap. the stylist will use a little hook to pull your hair through small holes through a plastic cap and then proceed to color the hair that has been pulled out the holes. its not as effective as getting your hair highlighted with foils or paper...it is generally used for shorter style or men and Chunking is coloring different sizes of chunks of hair.

Highlights can be done in natural or unnatural colors. Color highlights come in four categories: temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent and permanent. --- Thats too much of theoretical knowledge and I guess that's enough none of you are already sleeping! :p

LEARNING 2 - What is trending now days?

Highlighter highlights, as this dazzling dye job is so aptly named, features bright streaks of yellow, pink, and orange hues etched into hair to create one seamless colorful work of art reminiscent of the neon shades of the '90s. And like all trends, this vibrant hair dye moment is picking up steam on Instagram.

It's too loud isn't it?? or is it only me who feel so ( OH GOD I FEEL OUT OF PLACE ).... I might not be excited enough to get it done unlike some (no hard feelings)... but nowadays everyone loves to experiment, so why not!

LEARNING 3. What is the best highlights for YOU based on you skin tone?

Well this is pretty self explanatory..... look down the images you guys ;)

LEARNING 4 - Is it harmful to get Highlights?

Huge concern -- isn't it?? Frequent Asked Questions to oneself before getting Hair Highlights done... will it spoil my hair?, what if I get hair fall?, what if my hair look dull?.... A dilemma every girl or boy faces -- To get it done or not to get it done!! ...(uff so much to stress about) .

If the color is left on the hair for a long time it can dry up the hair and cause it fall off. If relaxer is left applied on the hair then it can cause serious abrasions on the scalp.

The hair color available at retail stores contain different chemicals than those in professional colors and sometimes when they come in contact with each other a chemical reaction takes place that burn your hair. (OK DON'T PANIC, RELAX , IT'S LIKE 1 IN MILLION CASE I GUESS ) .

Tip: If you are applying hair highlights at home then follow the instructions carefully and use a good brand like Revlon, Garnier, Streax, Wella Kolestint,Loreal ..... If you are doing it outside then do it from a reputed hair salon only. For people with sensitive skin, it is advisable to watch out for colour-based allergies and rashes. It’s better to go for a patch test before trying out a new brand or colour.

Too much of colouring can make the hair dry which can lead to brittleness. Another disadvantage of permanent hair colour is that the colour may fade from the hair, but it doesn’t go away completely. The only way to get rid of the dye from your hair is to cut it once it grows.

Frequent shampooing may lead to fading of colour and touch ups would be required.

Nothing is completely safe nowadays, to look fashionable you need to make sure you get regular hair spas to protect your hair after highlighting. Give an extra dose of moisture to your hair by deep conditioning it regularly or go for oil massages and apply hydrating hair masks. If you are bleaching your hair, make sure to use a conditioner to seal the hair follicles and lock in the moisture as bleaching makes the hair devoid of internal moisture. Also, invest in a smoothening shampoo that will keep the hair smooth and glossy.

Learning 5-Is it a unisex thing to do ?

Color is an under utilized way of adding a unique style and aesthetic appeal to your hair be it a men or women. Many men make the mistake of thinking when they color their hair, they have to go all out and look completely different, but the truth is even adding small highlights can make a big difference without looking too ‘out there’. same goes for a women . Well to conclude any one can get highlights. ;).

But the fact is the indian males are still orthodox about the concept of highlights which is trending abroad , see the glimpse below .

Come on Indian Mens there is no harm getting a color stroke here and there ;) .

Finally time to reveal MY highlights .... ;)

Before that I want to share my dilemma before saying yes to Highlights, I was told by my hair specialist that they don't use ammonia free color for highlights! Trust me.. I was like you kidding me ( "covering my face"-look), but the desire of having them at least once overpowered me and here we go my new look :p

THEN --I look so innocent lol :p

NOW --LOOKS DIFFERENT IN EACH PIC :P

SHADE: Its a dark brown base (NATURAL) with dark blonde highlights .... how do they look? :)

Salon : Tony & Guy -Chennai
